During a Labour Department performance review, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced the allocation of 1,224 free flats for workers in Taxila and Sunder labour colonies. Additionally, she mandated the disbursement of Rs 6 billion in death and marriage grants to 29,000 labourers previously overlooked by the former administration.
Maryam Nawaz also revealed plans to construct two hostels for female workers in Garment City, providing free housing for 704 women in Sheikhupura. The meeting also covered the workers’ scholarship program, establishment of labour colonies, health facility projects, and reforms in the Labour Department. Emphasizing the new minimum wage of Rs 37,000 per month, she stressed the government’s duty to ensure fair wages and worker rights.
The Chief Minister called for immediate collaboration with stakeholders to enforce the minimum wage and highlighted the importance of implementing safety protocols and SOPs, particularly for sanitary staff. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and other key officials attended the meeting.
Separately, in a video conference with British educationist Sir Michael Barber, Maryam Nawaz discussed educational reforms in Punjab, including modernizing teaching methods, implementing “CM Vision 2030,” and enhancing teacher training. Sir Michael praised the Punjab government’s efforts and offered insights on successful educational models.
Furthermore, Maryam Nawaz paid tribute to the officers and soldiers martyred in South Waziristan, expressing pride in the sacrifices made by the Pakistan Army and praying for the bereaved families.
