Rawalpindi: Project preparation for a signal free Murree Road from Saddar to Faizabad has formally started. The work on the mega project is expected to start in the next year. Under this project, under passes would be constructed at the two busier squares of the Muree Road – Marir Chowk and Liaquat Bagh. Preparation of feasibility reports for the project has started.
Chairman Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) Arif Abbasi said that as many as one hundred thousand vehicles and motor bikes commute on the Murree Road on daily basis; therefore, to reduce the density, two under passes would be developed keeping in view under-ground pillars and ceilings of the metro stations.
For the traffic at Marir Chowk, an under pass would be constructed to give a signal free access from Saddar to Liaquat Bagh Chowk and from Saddar to Kachehri Chowk. Similarly, for the traffic flow from Kachehri road to Saddar via Marir Chowk and to Mall Road at the left, a second under pass would be developed.
Design of the signal free Liaquat Chowk too has started, which upon completion will be presented in the RDA’s meeting and a PC-I would thus be prepared. Funds for the both projects would be taken from the Government of Punjab and MPA’s discretionary funds. When completed, travel time between Saddar and Islamabad will drop down to 10 minutes only.
