The highest cultivation of citrus fruits is in Punjab due to favourable temperature and environmental conditions. The total production is estimated to be 1.8 tonnes per year on an estimated area of 194,000 ha, with a per Acre yield of 4.6 tonnes.
Citrus harvesting season begins in November and ends in March. Pakistan is currently listed 20th in the world for citrus export. Brazil, China, the United States, Mexico, and India are the other major citrus fruit-producing countries.
Pakistan is the only commercial date-growing country with a wide range of fruits and vegetable exports almost every year. Pakistan ranks third in date production and is one of the major exporters of dates. Because of its export of the best quality dates, Pakistan earns a handsome amount from other countries which adds to the economic standing of the country.
Date harvesting season begins in July and lasts until September. Annual date reproduction in Pakistan is estimated at between 550,000- 650,000 metric tonnes. Sindh contributes roughly half of all dates produced in Pakistan, with Khairpur Mirs date palms accounting for 90%.
Pakistan is located in a vast agricultural region where dates can be grown on a large scale with high quality. There are almost 160 date palm varieties, but the most common are Aseel, Karbala, Fasli, Kupro, Muzawati, Japan, Swore, Kehraba, Rabai, Dhakki, Gulistan.
The biggest date-producing regions in Pakistan are Khairpur, Turbat( makran), D.I Khan, Muzaffar Garh, and Jhang. Pakistan ranks 5th in terms of dates production and is gradually making its way to the top in date cultivation.
Pakistan is working on supplying many fully processed dates in various styles and shapes. These include date chops, date paste, filled dates with peanut butter and chocolate-covered dates.
Banana is one of the significant cropped fruit in Pakistan. In Pakistan, traditional banana crops produce 5 to 6 tonnes of fruit per acre, whereas newly planted tissue-cultured banana crops will produce 30,000 to 40,000 tonnes per acre, with high export potential.
The new banana varieties were developed at the National Institute of the National Agricultural Research Centre, where 300,000 disease-free plants have been produced through tissue culture techniques. Cultivated banana has less sugar as foreign buyers like fruits have less sugar.
