Karachi, the largest and most populous city in the country, has long struggled with traffic congestion and pollution issues resulting from rapid urbanisation and a lack of efficient public transportation options. However, a transformative project called Karachi Metro Bus is set to revolutionise the city’s transportation system.
By introducing a network of bus rapid transit (BRT) lines, it aims to provide a fast, comfortable, and affordable means of travel, addressing the city’s transportation challenges. Graana.com shares all the details about this project below.
The project encompasses the development of six BRT lines, covering a total distance of 112.9 kilometres (70.2 miles) across various parts of the city. While the Green Line and Orange Line have already commenced operations, two additional lines, the Red Line and Yellow Line, are currently under construction as of June 2023.
As the longest and most crucial BRT line, the Green Line connects Merewether Tower in central Karachi to Surjani Town in the northern region, spanning a distance of 26 kilometres (16 miles) and featuring 22 stations.
With a capacity of 135,000 passengers per day, the Green Line operates on dedicated lanes, separate from other vehicular traffic. Additionally, it provides seamless connectivity with other BRT lines and the Karachi Circular Railway at various interchanges, ensuring a comprehensive and integrated transportation system for the city.

The specific stations of Green Line are as follows:
The Orange Line, also referred to as the Abdul Sattar Edhi Line in honour of the renowned philanthropist, caters specifically to the transportation needs of Orangi Town. This line spans a shorter distance of 3.9 kilometres (2.4 miles) and encompasses four strategically located stations within one of the world’s largest slums.
With a daily passenger capacity of 50,000 individuals, the Orange Line operates on elevated tracks, providing an elevated transportation experience above the existing road network.
The introduction of the BRT system in Karachi is expected to yield a multitude of benefits for both the city and its residents. Firstly, it will significantly reduce travel time, allowing commuters to reach their destinations more efficiently.
By reducing the number of vehicles on the road, the BRT system will also contribute to an improvement in air quality, creating a healthier environment for all. Furthermore, the project will generate employment opportunities during its construction and operation phases, stimulating economic growth and enhancing livelihoods.
Additionally, the BRT system will enhance mobility and accessibility for individuals across the city.
The Karachi Metro Bus project is more than just a transportation initiative. It symbolises the city’s commitment to progress, development, and collaboration. By addressing the long-standing transportation challenges, Karachi is taking a significant step towards becoming a modern, livable metropolis that caters to the needs of its residents.
Furthermore, the project serves as a model for other cities within Pakistan, showcasing the importance of sustainable and innovative solutions to overcome urban transport hurdles.
Through the establishment of an extensive BRT network, the project aims to tackle the issues of traffic congestion, pollution, and limited public transportation options. By providing a fast, comfortable, and cost-effective means of travel, Karachi is taking a significant leap towards transforming into a modern, inclusive, and sustainable city.
The completion dates for the remaining BRT lines may vary, but the project aims to finalise the entire network in the coming years.
The introduction of dedicated BRT lanes and the reduction in private vehicles on the road will significantly alleviate traffic congestion in Karachi.
Yes, the BRT lines are designed to be accessible to people with disabilities. The authorities have incorporated features such as ramps and designated seating areas.
