Islamabad is set to witness the construction of its first-ever cricket stadium as authorities push to finalize the project’s design. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to accelerate efforts, expressing frustration over prolonged delays.
During a high-level meeting at CDA headquarters, Naqvi emphasized the urgency of the project, instructing officials to engage a consultant for the stadium’s design. The proposed venue, expected to host over 50,000 spectators, is likely to be constructed near the D-12 sector, nestled at the foothills of the scenic Margalla Hills.
Plans for the stadium have been in discussion for some time. Last year, the CDA and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) deliberated over an agreement that would see the PCB complete construction within five years. The CDA proposed a 99-year lease on 280 kanals of land, with revenue distribution favoring the PCB at 70%, while the remaining 30% would go to the CDA.
A previous attempt to establish a cricket stadium in Shakarparian was abandoned due to legal complications. However, with a new site under consideration and government support backing the initiative, Islamabad’s long-awaited cricket stadium is finally set to move from the planning stage to reality.
