Islamabad, May 22, 2024—In a meeting chaired by Ms Romina Khurshid Alam, the PM’s newly appointed coordinator on Climate Change at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, the climate change advisory committee addressed the drastic impacts of the climate crisis in Pakistan.
The committee included representatives from the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), the Ministry of Federal Education, the Higher Education Commission (HEC), COMSATS, the Prime Minister’s Youth Program, CSOs, the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS), NGOs, the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI), the Planning Commission, the Ministry of Power (K-Electric), banking sectors, private universities, and the IMARAT Group.
Ms. Alam emphasised the necessity of collaboration among all stakeholders from both government and non-government sectors to achieve a national-level impact. Applauding the coordinator PM’s initiative to bring all stakeholders together, the committee agreed that the Ministry of Climate Change would create a dashboard for data collection to consolidate efforts.
In addition, Ms Alam highlighted her enforcement of a nationwide ban on plastic use and her initiative to host events to promote eco-friendly practices. She sought ideas from committee members to enhance climate literacy, climate security, climate waste management, and climate empowerment.
Foreseeing IMARAT Group’s proactive approach to environmental challenges, Ms Romina Alam asked them to develop a framework to combat the climate crisis. In response, IMARAT Group offered to dedicate one of its projects as a model for climate change-resilient initiatives in real estate. As one of Pakistan’s largest progressing sectors, real estate needs to be more environmentally conscious when taking steps for the future.
Farhan Javed, representing IMARAT Group, underscored its commitment to environmental sustainability by announcing the dedication of one of its projects as a pilot for the developmental framework on climate change. He stated, “At IMARAT Group, we believe in the urgent need for sustainable investment to combat climate change. Our pilot project is designed to reduce our carbon footprint and actively contribute to environmental recovery, aligning with the national cause.” This initiative is part of IMARAT’s broader commitment to incorporating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values into its business model, aiming to boost sustainable investment in Pakistan.
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) announced a directive for all vice-chancellors to ensure that every student and staff member plants a sapling on university grounds to contribute to the national cause.
The Ministry of Education reported that the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) had banned plastic use in schools and implemented activities such as kitchen gardening. Moreover, proposals were made for frequent awareness campaigns and incorporating climate change topics into the national curriculum.
The SIFC presented findings on pollution reduction, recommending the introduction of electric bikes, the revival of cycling culture, and the use of cement blocks instead of traditional brick kilns.
Ms. Alam expressed her gratitude for all the participants’ support and dedication to this national cause. She emphasised the importance of transforming Pakistan’s reputation through collective efforts and sustainable practices.
The meeting concluded with a collective pledge to support and drive environmental reforms nationwide. The collaborative efforts and initiatives discussed are expected to significantly contribute to Pakistan’s fight against climate change and set a precedent for sustainable practices.
IMARAT Group’s pilot project and the various initiatives highlighted in the meeting underscore the critical role of collaborative efforts in addressing climate change. With these concerted efforts, Pakistan is poised to make significant strides towards sustainable development, ensuring a greener, more sustainable future.
