History of Hyderabad Cricket Stadium

Niaz Stadium is located in Hyderabad, Pakistan, and holds significant historical significance. The stadium was named after the late commissioner of Hyderabad, Niaz Ahmed, who played a crucial role in its establishment.

On 16-18 March 1962, the stadium hosted its inaugural first-class match between South Zone and Pakistan Education Board (PEB). It marked a momentous occasion as Niaz Stadium became the 32nd first-class ground in Pakistan and the second in Hyderabad.

March 1973

Hyderabad has had the privilege of hosting only five Test matches, including two against England, two against New Zealand, and one against India. The first-ever Test match at Niaz Stadium took place from 16-21 March 1973, where England and Pakistan battled to a draw.

The match witnessed remarkable performances, with England amassing 487 runs, courtesy of a great innings of 158 by  Dennis Amiss. In response, Pakistan excelled, compiling 569 runs before declaring, with Mushtaq Mohammad scoring 157 and Intikhab Alam contributing 138 runs. England managed to hold on, finishing at 218 for 6 wickets, resulting in a draw.

November 1984

The last Test match played at Niaz Stadium occurred on 25-29 November 1984, featuring Pakistan and New Zealand. Notably, this match marked Test Cricket’s 1000th match. Pakistan emerged victorious with a day to spare, and Javed Miandad achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the second Pakistani, after Hanif Mohammad, to score a century in each inning of a Test match. Niaz Stadium takes pride in the fact that Pakistan has never lost a Test or One-day International at this venue.

After a ten-year hiatus, international cricket returned to Niaz Stadium on 24 January 2008 when Pakistan faced Zimbabwe. In April 2018, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced plans for renovations at Niaz Stadium, along with several other venues in the country, to ensure they are prepared for future international matches and fixtures, including those of the Pakistan Super League.
