How to Get a Driving Licence

 

 

The process of applying for a driving licence in Karachi has been described below.

 

License Offices in Karachi

Karachi has four different centres that can issue a driving licence. Three of these are located inside the city, while the fourth is located on the outskirts of the city, in Baldia Town. The following are the addresses of all centres:

  • Clifton Branch: 5th Zamzama St, Neelam Colony (nearest landmarks: Do Talwar and Mohatta Palace)
  • Korangi Branch: Sector 6A, Main Causeway, Korangi
  • Nazimabad Branch: Nawab Siddique Ali Khan Rd, A-9 Block 4 D/3
  • Baldia Town Branch: Traffic Training Institute Baldia Town, Saeedabad (nearest landmark: Hub Chowki)

Branch Timings

  • Monday to Saturday: 9 am to 4 pm
  • Friday: 9 am till 12.30 pm
  • Lunch hours (everyday except Friday): 1:00 pm till 1.30 pm

All the licence centres in Karachi mentioned above have the same timings.

Types of Driving Licences in Karachi

The issuance of driving licences and permits in Karachi is the responsibility of Sindh’s Driving Licence Department, a crucial unit of Sindh Police. It issues three different types of licences that are listed as follows:

  • Learner’s Licence
  • Permanent Driving Licence
  • International Driving Licence

Learner’s Licence

You must submit an application for a learner’s permit before receiving a driver’s licence. This means that you can drive on a public road with this licence while being closely supervised by a licenced individual.

Required Documents for Learner’s Permit

  • A copy of CNIC
  • A ticket of Rs. 60 from any post office
  • Fee for motorcycle: PKR 50; for car: PKR 100; for both combined: PKR 150
  • Medical Certificate (by an authorised medical practitioner)

Age Limit for Learner’s Permit

  • Motorcycle/Motorcar: 18 years
  • LTV (rikshaw, taxi, tractor): 21 years

Validity of Learner’s Permit

  • The validity of these is 6 months.

Additionally, a code book containing traffic laws and regulations must be obtained from a neighbouring traffic police station.

 

Permanent Driving Licence

 

 

You can apply for a permanent driving licence when the 42-day period following the acquisition of a learner’s permit is over. Just be sure to drive carefully because any issues with the traffic police could delay your chances of obtaining a permanent licence.

You must pass a few tests in order to apply for a permanent driving licence in Karachi. These tests are covered in more detail below.

Written, Eyesight and Driving Tests

You will be required to take a written exam so that the department may assess your understanding of traffic safety. Once you have passed the written exam, a medical examiner, who is on-site, will perform an eyesight test.

You will receive a receipt and be instructed to wait a week before your licence is mailed to you after completing all these tests.

  • Original learner’s permit (of at least 6 weeks)
  • Medical certificate from any medical centre
  • 3 passport-size recent photographs (attested)
  • Attested copy of CNIC
  • Ticket of the required fee

Validity of Permanent License

 The issued permanent driver’s licence will have a 3 or 5-year validity period.

International Driving Licence

 

 

If you are travelling abroad, it would be convenient to obtain an international driving licence beforehand. This can be easily obtained at any centre in Karachi. You must submit the following documents to get one.

  • International licence application form
  • Attested copy of Nadra CNIC
  • Copy of a valid driving licence
  • Copy of a valid Pakistani passport
  • 2 attested photographs (passport size)
  • Rs. 66 court fee ticket

Duplicate Driving Licence

Driver’s Licence Renewal

You have to book an appointment on the official DLS website in order to apply.

Keep in mind that you will not have to take a driving test again, however, you will have to take the eyesight test one more time.

Categories of Driving License and Fee

Driving licences in Pakistan are divided into the following categories.

  1. Motorcar/jeep: licences issued for non-commercial cars
  2. LTV: Licences issued for light transport vehicles that are valid for commercial taxis, jeeps, minibuses etc.
  3. HTV: Licences valid for heavy-weight transport, for example, buses, trucks, trailers, cranes etc.
  4. MCR: Licences valid for motorcycle rickshaws (these are not valid for cars)

  6. PSV: Licences for public service vehicles and taxis
