This Independence Day brings back memories of childhood celebrations when we would spend our pocket money on flags, buntings and sparklers, running around the streets in our new, crisply starched clothes to celebrate Azadi. While sitting here at my desk, thinking about Independence Day today, I can’t help but wonder how much we have changed after growing up. August 14 has become just another holiday for us, unfortunately.
I hear children in the neighbourhood squealing with delight this early in the morning, getting ready so they can watch the Independence Day programmes on TV and then go out to play with their tiny flags and specially tailored dresses. It seems that despite being so young, they probably have better appreciation for freedom and independence than the grownups around them.
This Independence Day, let’s keep the child within us alive. Let’s put down our phones and laptops, get out of bed, and appreciate the wonderful country we call home. Let’s go outside, let’s meet loved ones, let’s cook something special, and most of all, let’s talk about our beautiful country and everything we owe to it. Freedom and independence are indeed blessings – let’s make sure we truly appreciate them today. Let’s do tiny things that will collectively make a difference – plant a tree, give in charity, and make someone’s day with a random act of kindness. And most of all, let’s actively try to keep our surroundings clean and litter-free during the celebrations.
Team Graana hopes and prays that the coming year is a year of great prosperity for Pakistan. We wish you and your loved ones a very happy Independence Day!
