The University of Sargodha has a rich history dating back to 1916. It all began with a high school called O’Brien Islamia High School in Shahpur Sadar. In 1929, the school grew up and became De’ Montmorency College. Sir Henry Craik event inaugurated the college.
They named a building after him, Craik Hall, which is now called Tariq Hall. The first principal was Prof. Rana Abdul Hameed, who was in service until 1937. By 1932, the college was smart enough for graduate-level studies. When Sargodha became a district in 1940, the college moved to a new city, Sargodha.
In 1949, the college found a new home in the Hall PAF college building. In 1950, a new leader named Dr. Syed Abid Ahmed Ali took charge. After bouncing around a bit, the college finally settled in its current building on the Barrack Wala site.
In 1963, the college got a new, simpler name: Government College, Sargodha. Finally, in 2002, it became a full-fledged university. The first VC of the university was Dr. Riaz ul Haq, and today, it’s run by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas.
