Karachi – Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced the launch of a citywide anti-encroachment operation starting this Saturday to clear illegal structures from roads, footpaths, and stormwater drains throughout Karachi.
Chairing a key meeting at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) head office on Monday, the mayor stated that the initiative is aimed at easing the difficulties faced by pedestrians and the business community due to widespread encroachments. “Public spaces like roads, sidewalks, and drains cannot be occupied illegally and this will no longer be tolerated,” Wahab said, assuring that the drive will be impartial, transparent, and aligned with court directives.
Attendees at the meeting included KMC Municipal Commissioner SM Afzal Zaidi, Central Deputy Commissioner Taha Saleem, KMC Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro, and the mayor’s focal person for District Central Dil Muhammad.
Mayor Wahab instructed authorities to act firmly—but within the legal framework—against illegal constructions and land grabbing, particularly in sensitive areas such as graveyards and along stormwater drains. He clarified that the campaign will go beyond District Central and target encroachments in all city districts.
To ensure coordination and sustainability, efforts are being made to involve district administrations and other stakeholders. Wahab urged traders and shopkeepers to avoid using public areas for commercial purposes and to support the initiative.
Reaffirming his commitment to restoring Karachi’s civic systems, the mayor emphasized that the campaign is part of a broader mission to improve urban infrastructure and enhance the city’s livability.
