Being a training and production centre, the District Industrial Home is typically called Sanatzar. It was founded in 1979. The goal was to establish an institute for women where they learn contemporary skills and get trained so they can uplift their social and economic status.
Its first branch was founded in Lodhran, Mandi Bahauddin, Pakpattan, Narowal and Hafizabad, from the year 1994-1996. Currently, there are 36 branches of Sanatzars operating in Punjab.
District Industrial Home is a training cum production centre commonly known as Sanatzar. This scheme was launched back in 1979 with the aim to create opportunities for the socio-economic uplift of women in each district. Between 1994 and 1996, Sanatzar was established in Lodhran, Pakpattan, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Narowal. Presently, 36 Sanatzars are working in Punjab at the District headquarters.
The main idea behind Sanatzar was to make the spare time of women meaningful by training them in multiple market-based skills and on the other to give them economic independence so that they can add to the earnings of their homes by arranging centre/ order work for trained workers.
Sanatzar not only provides the workers with proper training and skills but also with the centre and order work, and the wages are given to them accordingly.
To ensure consistent financial support for the workers, they are assigned the products, known as centre work, all year round, in addition to order work. These products are then put for sale in the local markets. Other than that, different exhibitions are also arranged for the workers where they can sell their work.
Sanatzar organises regular exhibitions where they put their worker’s work up for sale. These exhibitions not only benefit the workers at Sanatzar but other women as well. They can sell their products in these exhibitions.
Women who learn skills at Sanatzar are guaranteed to uplift their lives in one way or the other. The institute not only teaches them in-demand and market-based skills but also makes sure to provide them with a consistent stream of income.
However, that’s not all Sanatzar also provides their workers with the opportunity to start their own business through the links they build with the stakeholders at exhibitions and other activities.
Starting their own business liberates these women workers from any sort of financial shackles by offering them the opportunity to not only learn new skills but also earn through them and even start their own businesses and create jobs for more people.
Sanatzar actively engages in partnerships with other institutions to capitalise on their new training approaches and increase the sales of centre work. At present, it has established collaboration with NAVTTC, extending training initiatives tailored for women to enhance their skill sets and opportunities for economic empowerment.
