ISLAMABAD: A total of seven development projects worth almost Rs36 billion were approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP).
Out of the seven projects, two large projects with an estimated total cost of Rs25 billion have been referred to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval.
The CDWP has been empowered under the revised financial rules to approve projects itself that cost no more than Rs10 billion. The projects of higher estimated costs will be approved by ECNEC once the projects are cleared on technical grounds by the CDWP.
Projects related to energy, industries and commerce, physical planning and housing, transport and communications and education were presented in a meeting of CDWP, which was presided over by Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Dr Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan and attended by senior officials from federal and provincial governments.
A project related to physical planning and housing, namely ‘Sewerage system from Larech Colony to Gulshan-e-Ravi Lahore’ worth Rs14.146 billion, and ‘Operationalisation of Green Line Bus Rapid Transport System Karachi” worth Rs10.956 billion have been recommended to ECNEC for further approval
Two projects related to energy sector were presented in the meeting, which the CDWP approved. Project ‘500kV Moro Substation’ worth Rs7.147 billion and a study for setting up of a few nuclear power projects worth Rs1.042 billion is funded by the Asian Development Bank.
‘Expo Centre Quetta’, a project related to Industries and Commerce and worth Rs2.5 billion was also approved in the meeting. The project envisages construction of two exhibition halls each having 45,000 sq ft floor area along with a convention centre and allied facilities having covered area of about 200,000 sq ft over 200 kanals of land in phase-1.
