ISLAMABAD: A proposal has been submitted to the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) Building Control Section to make it mandatory for all houses to have recharge wells in order to conserve rainwater.
The proposal has been made in light of the prevailing water crisis.
According to the water management Deputy Director General, Sardar Khan Zimri, the wells will be implemented during the construction process to ensure rainwater is harvested for longer and better recharge groundwater aquifers.
It has been brought to attention that current by-laws require homeowners to have water tanks for rainwater storage, although these rules are not being enforced.
The deputy director general has stated that these laws will now be implemented, with a focus on the construction of water tanks and recharge wells, as the city’s groundwater is rapidly depleting at a rate of four feet per year.
According to a CDA official, the construction of at least 70 underground wells in various areas, including most parks, has helped to increase the underground water table.
This issue has been ignored by the CDA for many years, despite Islamabad being a water-scarce city due to rapid population growth from urbanization and migration.
