ISLAMABAD: The expansion of the Islamabad Expressway from PWD to Grand Trunk (G.T.) Road is expected to initiate soon as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) is on-board to approve the project.
The project will be executed through a government-owned contractor agency. CDA officials have confirmed that several government-run contractors were shortlisted for the project, but the main firms that are likely to be approved are the National Logistic Cell (NLC) and the Frontier Work Organisation (FWO). The NLC and FWO are already involved in many CDA projects, and this contract will add another Rs.11 billion project to their portfolio.
Apart from widening and expanding the expressway, the construction of the Sohan bridge will also be included. The move comes after several attempts by the civic agency to reduce traffic congestion on the highway. CDA had already constructed several interchanges and flyovers to ensure seamless traffic, yet most efforts were in vain.
CDA reached a conclusion that the only solution left to is to widen the road all the way till G.T. Road. The expressway had previously undergone a widening project from Koral to PWD.
