The University of Agriculture in Faisalabad is a prominent institution in Pakistan’s agricultural landscape, dating back to before the country’s formation. In terms of the area covered, it is also one of the largest universities in Pakistan.
The university was established in 1906 as the Punjab Agriculture College and Research Institute in Lyallpur, now known as Faisalabad. The founder, Sir Louis Dane, chose a strategic location between two canals in undivided Punjab to establish the institution.
Prior to the 1947 Partition, Pakistan’s land had been well-suited for agriculture. To this day, agriculture remains a major source of income for the country. It constitutes one of the largest sectors of the economy and contributes approximately 18.9% to the total GDP.
The desire to enhance and improve the agricultural output of Pakistan through education and innovation drove the founding of the University of Agriculture in Faisalabad. They established the institution in a location where agriculture flourished, bringing together students and faculty to advance the sector. Over time, the university became increasingly focused on agriculture. Therefore, it was eventually renamed the University of Agriculture to reflect its central role in the field.
The institution faced some challenges. These include a significant drop in admissions in 1913, shortly after its inauguration, which prevented it from terming the cohort a full batch. Nevertheless, the university quickly recovered and adapted to the changing world, expanding rapidly and taking in new students.
Although it initially offered a programme called ‘Licentiate of Agriculture,’ which was unsuccessful, the program began to thrive under the administration at that time, eventually awarding its first MSc degree in 1920.
Since then, the institution has expanded its offerings to provide 41 comprehensive degrees to an average of 25,000 undergraduate students alone, in addition to awarding over 14,000 postgraduate degrees to scholars in both the Masters’s and Ph.D. programmes.
The University of Agriculture in Faisalabad has been ranked fifth in quality nationwide due to these phenomenal milestones. Moreover, UAF offers a wide array of options, including six departments, three institutes, seven allied disciplines, and a Center of Agriculture Biochemistry and Biotechnology.
In today’s world, a stable economy is greatly dependent on agriculture. Therefore, there is a dire need for better knowledge of farming and cultivation, which can lead to technological innovation. This, in turn, can greatly improve output quality and contribute to a more stable economy.
According to Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan, the current Vice Chancellor of UAF, the institution has a specialised mandate and is the trendsetter for innovation on agricultural issues, taking the forefront in achieving this cumbersome goal. UAF possesses the talent, opportunity, and ability to spearhead the evolution of the agricultural sector and revolutionise the landscape for research, farming, and agri-tech developments in Pakistan.
In addition, UAF is a research institute that has collaborated with institutes such as the University of California, Davis, to publish over 90 research projects. Their research funding has ranged from thousands of dollars to millions per project, spanning two to three years.
Furthermore, the topics of these research projects range from the molecular epidemiology of mycobacterium bovis to social issues, such as the impact on women and families left behind by family members who migrated abroad. These projects contribute to various fields, including socioeconomic issues, politics, and the pressing predicament of the deadly effects of climate change.
UAF has been working on making its operations more eco-friendly in recent years. They have introduced technology to increase accessibility and are trying to reduce their carbon footprint by innovating sustainable agriculture and using climate-friendly pesticides for crops.
