In the history of Pakistan’s energy sector, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) is a pioneering force that has played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s gas infrastructure. Established in 1963 as a private limited company, SNGPL swiftly transitioned into a public limited entity in January 1964 under the Companies Act 1913.
It has since been updated to the Companies Act 2017. Today, it proudly graces the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) with its presence, firmly established as a Public Interest Company according to the Third Schedule of the Companies Act, 2017.
One of the seminal milestones in SNGPL’s narrative was its strategic acquisitions. It inherited the Sui-Multan System, a colossal network comprising 217 miles of 16-inch pipelines and 80 miles of 10-inch pipelines, from the Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC).
Additionally, SNGPL expanded its portfolio by acquiring the Dhulian-Rawalpindi-Wah system, endowing it with an additional 82 miles of 6-inch diameter pipelines, courtesy of the Attock Oil Company Limited. These shrewd acquisitions served as the foundational bedrock for SNGPL’s burgeoning operations.
SNGPL embarked on its commercial journey by supplying an average of 47 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) of gas to two strategic regions: Multan and Rawalpindi. This inaugural endeavor quenched the energy thirst of 67 consumers, marking the dawn of SNGPL’s mission to satiate the burgeoning energy demands of North Central Pakistan.
Today, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited is an indomitable force, reigning supreme as the largest integrated gas company in the region. Its expansive network sprawls across the geographical expanse of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Notably, SNGPL’s certification against ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 45001:2018 standards attest to its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and occupational health and safety.
SNGPL’s proficiencies extend beyond the realms of gas transmission and distribution. Bolstered by over half a century of experience, the company has ventured into the realm of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects. It not only elevates its own infrastructure but also extends its contributions to other organisations, rendering it an indispensable asset to the nation’s infrastructure development.
The backbone of SNGPL’s transmission network extends from Sui in Baluchistan to Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, encompassing a staggering 9,239 kilometers (about 5740.85 mi) of Transmission System, inclusive of main lines and loop lines.
The distribution network mirrors this grandeur, catering to 5,284 main towns and their satellite villages, orchestrated through the assiduous efforts of 16 regional offices. This extensive distribution network spans a monumental 142,998 kilometers (about 88854.84 mi) of pipeline, ensuring that SNGPL’s reach extends to the farthest corners of the region.
SNGPL plays a pivotal role in shaping Pakistan’s energy landscape, catering to a diverse mosaic of over 7.22 million consumers. This extensive clientele encompasses the Commercial, Domestic, General Industry, Fertilizer Power, and Cement sectors.
Remarkably, in the fiscal year spanning from July 2019 to June 2020, the company recorded annual gas sales that scaled an astounding 623,724 MMCF. This staggering figure is a resounding testimony to the company’s versatility in delivering energy solutions across an array of sectors.
Recent times have witnessed SNGPL execute an audacious pipeline infrastructure development project. This ambitious endeavor entailed the installation of approximately 1,100 kilometers of pipelines, featuring diameters spanning from 16″ to 42″.
Moreover, the project was punctuated by the deployment of 35,000 HP compression units, ushering in an additional 1,200 MMCFD of RLNG (Re-gasified Liquified Natural Gas). The RLNG has been judiciously allocated across various sectors, including Industrial, Power, Cement, CNG, Commercial, and Domestic. The expansion doesn’t just cater to the burgeoning energy needs of the region but also injects impetus into economic development.
In alignment with the directives of the Government of Pakistan, SNGPL lends its expertise and services to Special Economic Zones (SEZs) strategically positioned across the nation. The company actively participates in the development of external high-pressure transmission networks and internal gas distribution networks, guaranteeing a steady gas supply to SEZs.
The collaborative endeavor is a magnet for investment and catalyzes industrial growth within these zones, thereby playing an instrumental role in Pakistan’s economic development.
Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited transcends being a mere energy provider; it stands as a symbol of progress, resilience, and unwavering commitment. With a storied past, a dedication to innovation, and a vision that peers into the future, SNGPL continues to steer Pakistan’s economic growth and development.
Its role in addressing diverse energy needs, its unwavering dedication to sustainability, and its contribution to the nation’s progress cement its place as a cornerstone in Pakistan’s journey towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
RLNG, short for Re-gasified Liquified Natural Gas, plays a pivotal role in meeting Pakistan’s energy demands. It involves the import of natural gas from foreign countries in liquid form, which is then converted back into a gaseous state. RLNG is crucial, especially during periods of high energy demand.
SNGPL’s certification against ISO 14001:2015 & ISO 45001:2018 standards reflect its steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability and the safety of its operations. These standards ensure that the company operates responsibly, minimizing its environmental footprint and prioritizing the safety and well-being of its workforce and consumers.
SNGPL plays a pivotal role in the development of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) by providing the essential gas infrastructure. By ensuring a reliable gas supply to SEZs, the company attracts investment and fosters industrial growth within these zones, thereby significantly contributing to Pakistan’s economic development.
