History
Government Murray College, Sialkot, initially known as Scotch Mission College, was founded by Scottish missionaries from the Church of Scotland Mission in 1889. The first Scottish missionary, Reverend Thomas Hunter, arrived in Sialkot in 1857. The Scottish missionaries, who hail from Scotland and were educated at its prestigious universities, selflessly work to educate the people of Sialkot.
In 1972, the Pakistani government dismissed the Scottish missionaries and nationalised the institution. The college began as Scotch Mission High School in 1888 and was upgraded to an intermediate college in 1889 at the request of the Punjab Government.
This institution, now known as Govt Murray College, Sialkot, is proud to have been the alma mater of the great poet-philosopher Dr. Muhammad Iqbal, who joined the school in 1883 and enrolled as an intermediate student in 1893.
The history of Murray College is remarkable. Initially, the Church of Scotland rejected the request to open a college in Lahore in 1883 despite an attractive financial offer. However, destiny favoured Sialkot when the Punjab Government requested the Foreign Committee to establish a college there in 1889.
The intermediate section of the college began in the school building. For 20 years, it was taught by individuals representing various communities and offering subjects such as English, Philosophy, Arabic, Persian, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.
