Lahore General Hospital is located on Ferozepur Road, covering an area of 256 kanal. It was initially intended to be a beggar house, and its foundation stone was laid on 27 February 1958, by Begum Naheed Sikandar Mirza, the wife of the then-governor general of Pakistan.
The first phase of construction was completed later that year, and the opening ceremony was held on 30 September 1958. However, due to certain circumstances, the plan for a beggar house changed and the government decided to provide healthcare facilities to the general public, thus leading to the establishment of the Lahore General Hospital.
The hospital was inaugurated on 29 January 1959 by the then-governor of West Pakistan, Mr. Akhtar Hussain. Following the establishment of the Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Lahore in 1974, General Hospital became affiliated with the institute in July 1975.
In 1995, when Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) was relocated to a new campus, the Jinnah Hospital complex became affiliated with AIMC, and PGMI was moved to Services Hospital in Lahore. General Hospital Lahore then became affiliated with AIMC until May 31, 1997, when it was re-associated with PGMI.
Currently, all the departments, including the neurosurgery department, are affiliated with PGMI Lahore. In 2017, the hospital achieved a milestone by performing the first laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in a public sector hospital. It was also granted an exemption from all utility taxes.
