In this blog, Graana.com has come up with an account of the mega project of Malir Expressway.
The Malir Expressway is a 39.3 km four-lane dualised expressway project being developed by the Local Government Department (LGD) of the Government of Sindh. It is designed to provide a new southern alternative route for carrying port traffic and traffic from industrial areas to main highways.
The Malir Expressway project is being developed on a Design, Built, Finance, Operate & Maintain, and Transfer (DBFOT) arrangement with a concession period of 28 years, which includes 3 years of construction and 25 years of operations and maintenance.
The concessionaire will be responsible for designing and constructing, financing, operating, and maintaining the project. Also, the project will be constructed with modern technology and materials to ensure its longevity and sustainability.
The Malir Expressway project is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project. This means that the private sector will finance the project and recover their investment by collecting tolls from the commuters of the project. The concessionaire will finance the project. Also, they will have the right to levy and collect tolls from the commuters of the project during the concession period.
The Malir Expressway project will significantly impact the region’s economy by facilitating the movement of goods and services. It will provide speedy access to key real estate schemes along the route. Hence it will reduce the commuting time from KPT Flyover to Super Highway (M-9) to only 25 minutes.
This reduction in travel time will improve the quality of life for the residents and provide economic support to the area. The project will also help reduce traffic congestion on the existing routes. Additionally it will provide a more efficient transportation option for carrying port traffic to main highways.
The Malir Expressway project has attracted a lot of interest from investors since its announcement. The Local Government of Government of Sindh (GoS), in Collaboration with the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit, organised the first-ever ‘Investor Conference’ on Thursday, 1st March, at the Movenpick Hotel.
Moreover, the conference was attended by leading local and international business groups, banks, non-banking financial institutions, and construction companies. The consultants for the project briefed the audience in detail about the technical, legal, and financial aspects of the project and responded to their queries.
The participants also showed keen interest in the project and appreciated the GoS for bringing an equal opportunity, for the first time, to the financial investors to lead infrastructure projects. Otherwise, these were only confined to the construction industry.
The Malir Expressway project will significantly improve the accessibility and connectivity between Karachi and Hyderabad by making a new southern alternative route. The expressway will connect the Karachi Port Trust Flyover to the Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9) near Kathore via a link road, totaling 39.3 km.
This route will carry port traffic and traffic from industrial areas to main highways, giving a faster and more efficient transportation option.
Furthermore, the Malir Expressway project is located in a strategic location with easy access to the Karachi port, one of the busiest ports in the region. The expressway will provide a direct connection to the port, making transporting goods to and from the port easier, reducing transportation costs, and increasing efficiency.
Malir Expressway is a mega project in Karachi that aims to improve the commute system and ease traffic congestion in the city. The expressway will be a four-lane dualised road running along the Malir River from KPT Interchange to DHA City. The project is divided into two phases: Phase-I involves transaction, preparation & approval, while Phase-II involves construction, operation & maintenance.
According to the latest updates, the project has received approval from the Sindh Chief Minister for minor changes in the alignment of the expressway in the Gadap and Memon Goth areas. These changes will reduce the land acquisition cost and avoid the displacement of houses. Currently, it is undergoing environmental impact assessment to address concerns of concretisation, greenhouse gas emissions, and noise pollution.
