GILGIT: 4G Internet services were formally launched by a mobile service provider in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) in a ceremony where GB Chief Minister Hafeezur Rehman was the chief guest.
Due to the extreme weather and topographical conditions, deployment of optical fibre in the region was challenging, said CEO Irfan Wahab Khan, of the mobile service provider. The region was mainly served with Legacy VSAT satellite network to provide the residents with telecom services.
Mr Wahab told that his company has used O3b satellite network to offer the 4G service, as the low altitude reduced latency by up to four times bringing it on a par with long haul fibre transmission.
